Parte dalla Lombardia, in provincia di Varese, Como e Milano, la sperimentazione del numero unico di emergenza europeo 112, destinato a essere utilizzato in tutta Italia, come già avviene in diversi Paesi dell'Unione Europea.
Il numero è attivo presso la centrale operativa del 118 di Varese, un call center in grado di raccogliere e smistare le chiamate di tutti i numeri di emergenza: 112, 113,115 e 118, ossia polizia, carabinieri, vigili del Fuoco, emergenza sanitaria, polizia locale e protezione civile .
